דֶער אֱמֶת׳ר יוּד - The Genuine Jew

The Geniuine Jew is a Newspaper that was published from February to October 1904 in Lviv, at that time part of the Habsburg monarchy, now in the Ukraine. It has been digitised by the Austrian National Library as PDFs. The aim of this project is to translate that paper, annotate and enrich it, provide context about the themes and topics written about, the people and places mentioned, and enhance accessibilty to those who do not understand the Yiddish language using the Open Source and FAIR principles.

The translated source and facsimile are listed in Edition. The font and size of the translation can be changed by clicking the blue wheel in the upper right corner. In this toolbox the annotations can be turned on as well. Highlighted entitites are linked to the registers for further information. Other links lead to Wikidata pages for information on, for example, an event, concept, or law.

The register lists the People and Places mentioned in the source supplied with life data, coordination and links to external databases.

Search provides a full-text search of only the translated text. As of now, the searched phrase needs to be spelled exactly how it is written with Umlauts and hyphens.

Further Ressources will list tools used and further literature as well as presentations I have given on the topic and my thesis once completed.

The Genuine Jew is a Master's thesis project and an ongoing work in process. At the end, it will contain all 13 issues and 88 pages of March and April. Currently, the focus lies on enriching the website with content, enhancing accesibility, and providing Yiddish press translated into the English language for further usage. More features will be added continously.
